In this Halacha shiur for Pesach we offer an introduction to the issue of קטניות on Pesach. We will begin with the sugya in Pesachim regarding rice flour, can it become חמץ? We accept the view that קטניות cannot become chametz, and the Mechaber codifies this Heter allowing cooking with kitnios on Pesach. The Ramah writes that our custom in to be strict on kitnios & one must not deviate from that custom. We will see that this custom dates back to the Rishonim and even earlier. We will explore the various reasons for this חומרא and the difference between these reasons especially if kitnios were accidentally cooked in a תבשיל, do we require ביטול בשישים? Can an Askenazi eat food prepared in the utensils of his Sefardic host used for kitnios?
