Description

For Parshat Mishpatim we will discuss 2 issues re: the understanding of the Torah. First the principle of פשוטו של מקרא and we will analyze the simple meaning of ועבדו לעולם in the verse that sets the time for the freedom of an Eved Ivri Nirtza. In the second half of this shiur we will address the q': does Rashi's interpretation of the Torah reflect the final Halacha? This q' has direct bearing on Rashi in Mishpatim re: the word שארה which Rashi explains as Mezonot (financial support). The Ramban takes Rashi to task since we Pasken that Mezonot is only Rabbinic, a part of the institution of Ketuva. Back in Bo, Rashi seems to assume that having a non-Jew working for you on Y"T is a DeOraisa. Ramban argues. We will see the Meforshei Rashi.
