One does not "own" his own life & must be careful to preserve & protect it. Yet we find that Jewish History from the time of the Avos thru the period of the Tanaim and all the way to modern times, the giants of our people have relied upon Hashem & His miracles. Are there situations in which one may expose himself to danger for the sake of a greater cause? What conditions must be met in order to permit making a dangerous move? We will analyze 3 approaches to this question. That of the Ramban, of the Sefer HaChasidim, & of the Chafetz Chaim. These will give us an insight into the episode in which Rebby Chanina ben Dosa miraculously killed the dangerous serpent. Yet none of these seem to justify many heroic cases of our History.
