By Shabbos and Yom Tov the light of the candle meets us when we reach a high level. On Chanukah, the light comes to meet us, even in our low place. Rebbe Nachman says that the more sick the patient, the bigger necessity for a better doctor. Same too by Tzaddikim. We add a candle each night because we need more light to be spread to more places.
