Description
Rashi tells us at the beginning of Parshat Vayishlach that Esau and his men are threatening to destroy Yaakov, and that despite Hashem's promise to protect Yaakov, the latter has profound fears lest Esau do him harm. How does this make sense in the light of the fundamental principle that prophetic promises cannot be rescinded? In fact this principle underlies our very belief in the veracity of prophecy, one of the fundamentals of our faith. We will study the insights of the Mizrachi and the Maharal, and offer two approaches to resolve this seeming contradiction.
