In this introduction to the mitzva of Nichum Aveilim, we will address the following questions: is this a mitzva DeOraisa & if so, what is its source? Which comes first Nichum Aveilim or Bikur Cholim? How are we meant to fulfill this mitzva? What is the objective of the mitzva? Can one fulfill the mitzva by calling the Aveil on the telephone? Is the Aveil part of this mitzva, i.e. is the mourner required to accept the consolation of the Menachamim? We will try to understand the purpose & role of the "official" declaration of the Menachamim: המקום ינחם אתכם?? Ultimately does a human being have the ability to console the bereaved? We will study the presentation of HaRav Eliyahu Dessler on this question.
