Can the mitzva of Ahavas Hashem permit suicide & even murder? Does the Halacha equate suicide with murder? The קינות of Tisha Bav record the history of the persecution during the Crusades & the case of those who - rather that permit themselves to be taken & tortured by the enemy - took the lives of their own children & others before taking their own lives. The primary case in Tanach of someone who took his own life is that of Shaul HaMelech. Was the King Halachically justified? But even if we grant that suicide might be permissible under very limited, extreme circumstances, does the same permission apply to murder? All may depend upon a debate re: interpreting a statement of Chazal on the passuk in Noach, as well as the Minchas Chinuch.
