Description

In this shiur for Masechet Makot 23a, we will study the particulars of giving Malkot. The laws of the straps, the position of the sinner leaning on the pole, the various roles of the three members of the team supervising the malkot. In general, what is the obligation of Beit Din vis-a-vis the sinner who receives Makot? One of the issues is the question of when the process og giving Malkot begins? Is it the moment the victim is tied down? Or later when the Chazan lifts up the straps with his arms? Or is it only after the first of the Malkot was meted out? This issue is relevant to the many scenarios which exempt the sinner from malkot, e.g. if he soiled, or ran away, or if the strap snapped. At what point does the Ptur kick in?
