Pages 35-37 in Rav Kook's maimar 'Hador'. The Chazon Ish used to say that the reason for the generational decline is due to the fact that avodas hashem was looked at as a burden and secularism was associated with happiness. Of course the younger generation had a ton of lies and garbage mixed into their ideas and thoughts, but their potential to grow if they were only lead in the right direction and shown the light of Torah, was outstanding. The chiddush of a Tzaddik is the fact that they could be to themselves all day and continuously grow in learning but they choose to help and change many people around them. Rav Kook teaches that a fundamental point in the Toras HaBaal Shem Tov is that our goal isn't to destroy the lion but to conquer it.
