In Parshat Shemot, Moshe has his 1st encounter with Dasan & Aviram; the latter are quarreling with each other & they come to blows. Moshe declares "Why would you strike your friend"? Rashi comments "one who raises his hand to strike someone is called a rasha". We will study the Lav which prohibits one from striking a Jew. The Lav in its original form relates to the Shaliach Beit Din who is meeting out the punishment of lashes against a convicted criminal. We'll discuss the severity of this aveira & the status of one who assaults a fellow Jew; a Rasha who strikes a rasha; hitting for the purpose of discipline; wife beating; raising a hand against a fellow Jew to threaten him. Does the license to strike a rasha apply in contemporary society?
