Based on the essay Bein Kesseh Le'achor in the sefer Einei Yisrael by Rav Elya Weintraub z'l. On Rosh Hashanah, the blessing of emes (truth) is revealed to a greater degree. All of creation is intuitively connected to Hashem and His truth. Humans, in all of creation, are the only beings that are not forced (because of free choice) to live according to Hashem's will and emes. [EDIT Jeff around 12 min mark]. The different shorar sounds describe mankind in his different states. Cleaning out all the external junk allows us to return to our original state of true and eternal connection to the King. G-d created a clear world, but we see a lot of confusion and kochos (powers) that are in contradition to Him. What exactly did the goat to Azazel "carry?" Reasonable and strong decisions for the future.
