Description

The word 'daven' comes from d'avun in Aramaic which means 'from the fathers'. At the Yam Suf (Sea of Reeds), the Jewish people davened like the avos (forefathers). We turn to Hashem when we are in a narrow place, but isn't every moment of our lives a narrow place? We have to call out to Hashem even before we call out for help in the physical world. The basis of davening is the recognition that every single second of our life is in Hashem's hands, that everything comes from Hashem. The reason that Hashem puts us into trouble is so that we will call out to Him. A person's shira (song) is the doing of what they were put into the world to do. A song has the power to straighten out the crookedness of the heart.
