The young people went off because they were not exposed to such a broad way of thinking in their Torah education, yet were exposed to this in the European literature. Rav Kook says that because the literature is what drew people away, the Torah world needs to use sifrus that communicates deep Torah ideas to win over the generation. High school kids should be exposed to the deeper ideas these days. The Jewish fascination with technology is not the same as the non-Jews' fascination with technology. Jews are looking for shalvah pnimis and will go anywhere to find it.
