Description

Ma'amar HaDor, P19. In the 18th century, Jewish education was not comprehensive and did not give the young generation what they were looking for that they saw in the non-Jewish philosophies. They did not know how to understand the details as parts of an all-encompassing Torah system. Jews especially want to understand the big picture. The Malbim wrote his peirush (commentary) on the Tanach in a more modern style in order to appeal to the young Jews. The young people ended up turning bitter and dedicating themselves to the non-Jewish movements and philosophies. Just a little bit of a strong and pure intellectual understanding of something can last forever, while emotions do not. Yiddishkeit is about the fusion of intellect and emotion.
