Description

a'amar HaDor, P17. The real core sickness of the generation is the machshava (mind, the way of thinking) which leads to people not understanding each other. All of the other problems of taivas (lusts) are side effects. In previous times most people who left Judaism was because they wanted freedom from the rules, not for intellectual reasons. In 18th century Europe, people developed an intellectual desire to rebel against authority and claim individuality. The Jewish masses were being swept along by the non-Jewish thinkers who were promoting grand, sweeping philosophies that would explain life, but without Torah. The Jewish thinkers started asking 'Why?' about their feelings about Judaism, and they could not find clear and rational answers.
