Based on the Ma'amar "Ein Yei'ush Ba'Olam' p 230 in the sefer "Yichud Hahisbodedus" by Rav Avraham Tzvi Kluger We often accept less than we should strive for because we feel unworthy - thus we settle. Who do we think we are (were) worthy of marrying - did we settle (because of our lack of self-esteem?)) Yeiush (giving up) mi'da'as (conscious) which is reasonable according to the facts on the ground vs. yei'ush she'lo mi'da'as (unconscious giving up). In Chassidus this is applied as: giving up can only happen because the person has no da'as (knowledge). The entire Jewish nation is the product of something that could never be - two old people (Avraham and Sarah) who had given up on ever having children. There is always hope, and it is our obligation to hope - kaveh el Hashem (place your hope in Hashem). Others believe 100% that Hashem can and will improve their life - but for now, they don't have the energy and life-force. What if the capacity for true simchah (joy) seems to have died? There is a 'candle' that can light up the darkness within me right now - we have all the tools we need to contend with the present moment.
