Description

The body is a garment for the neshama (soul). The three-step process of hachnaah (submission), havdalah (separation), and hamtaka (sweetening) help us to identify with the neshama. Though we must break the body's hold on the neshama then separate the two, the ultimate goal is the healthy reunification of the two. Some of our desires come from the body and some come from the neshama, but the difference is not so easy to discern. The step of submission without a proper havdalah can leave unhealthy desires alive and active in the thoughts and emotions. Daas is the power to discern the differences between seemingly similar things.
