Alternative to fasting is chesbon haNefesh (spiritual accounting). Set up a regular schedule to repeat over & over again "There is a Creator." And then- "I am your servant!" Only Hashem gave us this day to serve Him. Choose a quite time (no phones, no emails) to review your day and speak personally with Hashem. After one reviews this day then make a simple request - ask Hashem for help to make tomorrow a better day!
