Description

p 164. Yiras Shamayim (fear of Heaven) means living in a constant state of being a servant to Hashem, and keeps us going to the end. With Hashem and His Torah, we have nothing. Ahava (love) involves having a greater feeling of my own existence while yira (fear) reminds me that existence is really about Hashem. The danger of ahava is getting lost in self, while the danger of yira is losing self. Having yira for the chachamim (Torah scholars) will eventually make us chachamim. Without yira, there can be no chochma (wisdom). Our yiras shamayim is completely what we have worked for, it is not a gift.
