Description

From the Pinkassei HaRayah, 3rd part, p 360 of the Arugas HaBosem (written by Rav Kook). The neshamah (soul), by its very nature, wants to hear its own voice, yet it is forced to hear and take in what others have to say. The neshama's sadness due to a lifelong repression of its voice. Taking in, sorting out and properly assimilating outside concepts and voices into one's soul; over time some of these concepts are accepted and woven into the fabric of that person. Children, especially are very susceptible to influences from strong personalities in their lives - be they parents, educators or peers. The puzzling tannaic statement that the person who takes a break from his learning to admire a tree that Hashem has created has forfeited his life. What does it mean when a person wants to connect to Hashem in a way that might be outside of the learning they are doing that moment. The silliness of looking at a picture of something when the original is right next door.
