Description

Biography. Tzemach Tzeddek opened many yeshivas around Europe and established communities all over Russia. His focal point was on the mainstream learning, while the previous Rebbe focused on chassidus. The Tzemach Tzeddek was very involved in the war against the Maskilim (Enlightenment). The Maskilim tried very hard to secularize the Jews. A leader in Business, a head of a Yeshiva, a tzaddik, and a leader of the Maskilim, all gathered together for a meeting. The Tzemach Tzeddek was chosen as the tzaddik to represent the Jews. He displayed a tremendous amount of mesiras nefesh (giving up of oneself) and was very successful during the period of enlightenment.
