Description

P. 97. A person may be doing good, but the motivation might be coming from a bodily desire. If so, then that good goes with the body when it gets buried. The ikar (main) work in avodas Hashem is how we do our avodah when alone. It is also possible to not do aveiros (sins) from a bodily desire, and not l'shem shamayim (for the sake of Heaven). Gehinom is the pain of the nefesh that wanted to do aveiros after the body dies, when the body prevented the nefesh from doing the aveiros while alive. The way of the Baal Shem Tov is to do more and more good as a way of pushing away the evil. It is possible to use bitterness, regret, and a broken heart to bring on simcha (happiness). Those who you are truly connected to in this world are those who you will be connected with in the next.
