Description

P. 35. The yesod (foundation) of Chassidus is to understand the difference between chochmah (wisdom) and binah (understanding). A chochmah person is connected to the shoresh (root) of a concept is not thrown off by details. He can learn from anyone and enjoys taking in a new idea and integrating it into what he already knows. A binah person needs a makom kavua (a set-aside space) and quiet to be able to deal with details. The two personalities correspond to the ohr makif (surrounding light), chochmah, and the ohr pnimi (inner light), binah. When we bring surrounding light into ourselves and it transforms in an inner light, there is a dimming of that original light. Each of the two personalities has its unique challenge in maintaining balance, and many psychological disorders come from an imbalance between chochmah and binah.
