The avodah (spiritual work) of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur is ratzo (turning to Hashem) panim el panim (directly facing).Rosh Hashanah infuses the love of Hashem into the physical life the entire year. On Succos we receive the power to infuse ruchnius (spirituality) into gashmius (our physical life) for the coming year. If we love Hashem enough and draw Him into our everyday actions, then His presence will cast a shade that protects us from the sun of this world. The presence of Hashem on Succos is expressed as an embrace – an action that is close, but not panim el panim. Embracing represents infusion of ruchnius into gashmius.
