Strengthening thoughts leads to emotional control. Understanding the words of davening (prayer) is only using intellect. G-d and the Jewish People are like a chasan and kallah (groom and bride). Living in concepts and ideas without feelings causes personal damage. It is possible to speak and yet not create real relationship with others. Having an abstract relationship with Hashem (G-d) is dangerous.
