Description

From Toras Emes, Vayetze (p. 93). God is called “makom” (place), which shares a root with “kiyum” (established). In life, people think they leave “the place,” yet end up happening on “the place.” God is everywhere and sustains everything, big and small. By attaching to the root of “the place,” a person never ceases to be attached to God, regardless of where they find themselves. Therefore, a person has trials and tribulations and finds himself in places he never anticipated, yet can always remain connected. A Jew must know and believe that the redemption is coming the very next moment. Exile must be treated as a temporal existence, with redemption around the corner, always holding onto “the place." The sun sets, but it always rises.
