Description

We learn in Parshat Chayei Sara that Avraham refused to accept the Machpela for free. Back in Vayeira Avraham accepted gifts from Pharoh and Avimelech, but yet refused to receive anything from the King of Sedom. What is the pattern? Mishlei teaches that One who refuses gifts will life? But do we hate to receive gifts? We will study this very relevant issue in our lives and try to understand when we should avoid gifts and why, and when we may accept gifts and why. Are there situations in which we should accept gifts? Should we avoid accepting social welfare? Gifts from stores and government agencies? What about gifts from parents? Stipends for education and Torah learning?
