Description

The name 'Adam' reflects both the lowliness of man, his 'adama' component; yet paradoxically, this name reflects man's greatness. In this shiur we will discuss the third day of creation, when Hashem separated the waters. As described by R' Bechai, the waters were lowered from the upper worlds, and according to the Midrash, the waters cried over the fact that they were distanced from the King of the Universe. Hashem consoled the waters by mandating the mitzvah of Nisuch HaMayim on Sukkot. The latter sends a message of hope to man & teaches how man can achieve joy in his closeness to the Almighty. We will study the 'bechiya (tears) shel chinam' of the 9th of Av, and contrast it with the 'bechiya shel d'veikut' of Sukkot.
