Description

The sugya establishes that on Rosh Hashana the beinoni is put on hold, "taluy ve'omed", as if to say that his final judgement is postponed until Yom Kippur. The Rambam teaches that the beinoni has two options: Teshuva or death. Why can't the beinoni simply add mitzvot to his account & tip the scale in his own favor? Why must he do Teshuva & nothing else will save him. In this shiur we will offer a number of approaches to understand the absolute need for Teshuva in the case of a beinoni, but the most revolutionary is that of Rav Chaim Shmuelevitz in his Sichot Mussar. This new approach will shed light on the sugya in the Yerushalmi which asks why Hashemdoesn't condemn the beinoni on R"H a since He knows that the beinoni will not do Teshuva.
