Description

With the shmittah year just a week away, we will study some of the practical laws for the observance of shemittah. After introducing the verses in the Torah that command us in this mitzvah, we will begin with the question "how and where do I buy vegetables after Rosh Hashana"? We will discuss issues like gardens and flowers, opening the fields and making the fruits Hefker, which melachot are forbidden acc to Torah law, which are derabanan, and is Shmittah Deoraita today? Does Arab produce have the status of Kedushas Shvi'it? We will touch briefly on the institution know as Otzar Beit Din, and the problematic nature of the so-called "Heter Mechirah".
