Description

In this shmooze for Tisha BeAv & Shabbat Nachamu, we will study two central themes regarding the nature of our avelut (mourning) on the 9th of Av. The first theme reflects upon a proper understanding of the concept of churban. The latter is not limited to the destruction of the Batei Mikdash but rather encompasses all of Jewish tragedy throughout history. The second theme: concept of the accumulation of sins that brought about the churban. Both of these motifs are reflected in the Kinot. But Tisha B'v also contains within it the seeds of Nechama, the consolation and hope for the redemption. It is a Moed. The readings for Shabbat Nachamu reflect the light inherent in the darkness, the hope inherent in despair, growth inherent in desolation.
