Mussar focus on the deficiencies and faults a person needs to work on. Chassidus focuses on the light of the Godly soul. Darkness cannot exist in the presence of light. Chassidus does not disregard mans shortcomings but they are not the focus. An aware person who adds light to his life will automatically spell away darkness. A rat only comes out in the dark, the moment light is cast upon it, it scurries back to its hole.
