Description

In this shiur on the Ramban on Parshat Yitro, we will analyze the Ramban's definition of the first of the Aseret HaDibrot, namely, Anochi Hashem Elokecha. The Ramban quotes the Mechilta which asks why the second Dibra, Lo yihyeh Licha, is necessary. The Mechilta presents a metaphor of a King who visits his citizens and they request his decrees. The king responds, before I can issue my decrees you must accept my sovereign rulership. The Ramban defines the two dimentions of the mitzvah of Anochi. Elsewhere the Ramban explains why the BaHaG omits Anochi from the counting of the Taryag. We will try to explain why Anochi is not just a mitzva, but rather the "Av" of all the mitzvot.
