Description

A single verse in Parshat Miketz (43: 14) lends itself to three different interpretations, each of which reveals profound insights into prophesy & prayer, and the hope of a father for a long lost son. Although the Ramban accepts the basic approach of Rashi, namely that Yosef is alluded to in the words of Yaacov, the Ramban does not subscribe to Rashi's "unconscious prophecy" thesis, but rather interprets the vese "al pi pshuto" as a deliberate formulation of Yaacov's conscious mind, a prayer in which each and every word is precisely calculated.
