Dear Rabbi Sugarman,
I enjoy listening to your daf yomi shiur. I can tell that you are an experienced and a good teacher. אזוב or hyssop is a small grayish shrub as highly valued for its fragrance and flavor. It is in the oregano family and is now found in the spice mixture za’tar that is available in many supermarkets. For more information check out Nogah Hareuveni’s book "Tree and Shrub in our Biblical Heritage", pages 93-106.
During World War II the Allies invented radar and were able to shoot down the Nazis’ planes. They did not want to reveal their secret weapon lest the enemy also develop radar. They circulated the story that their soldiers and pilots ate carrots because carrots improved their eyesight. This is the origin of the myth that carrots improve eyesight.
Sincerely,
Rabbi Gary Greene
